Withdrawn Norwegian notes and coins can be exchanged at one of our offices or sent in via post. We do not exchange valid banknotes and coins.

How do I send withdrawn banknotes and coins by post?
You should contact your local postal service to enquire about the appropriate way to send money by post from your location. Sending banknote(s) by post is at your own risk. So please take reasonable measures to insure against loss or theft.
When sending money, please enclose the following information:
- full name
- the case number, which you will receive by e-mail after completing the exchange form online
- copies of your photo ID (mandatory for any exchange above NOK 1 000). A certified ID copy is required when the amount is from NOK 8 000 and above.
Norges Bank will transfer the amount to your account when we receive your exchange form and the banknote(s).

You should contact your local postal service to enquire about the appropriate way to send money by post from abroad. Sending banknote(s) by post is at your own risk. So please take reasonable measures to insure against loss or theft.
You must include the Proforma/Custom Invoice in the letter/parcel - along with your full name and the case number you will receive by e-mail after completing the exchange form online. Please submit the paper form if you didn't use the electronic exchange form. You must also include copies of your photo ID (mandatory for any exchange above NOK 1 000). A certified ID copy is required when the amount is from NOK 8 000 and above. Alternatively, you can confirm your identity via a passport reader app (Please contact us by e-mail: KBKontroll@norges-bank.no for further instructions).

Can I come to Norges Bank in person and deliver the banknotes and coins?
Monday to Friday from 9 am- 3 pm CET
No appointment is needed.
Do I need an appointment to deliver or exchange the money over the counter?
Can I have withdrawn banknotes and coins redeemed in cash?
You can only exchange withdrawn banknote(s) series VII for new banknote(s) up to NOK 7 000 over the counter (no coins). Complete the electronic exchange form and bring the banknote(s) and photo ID to one of our counters in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø - Monday to Friday from 9 am - 3 pm CET. Drop-in.
You cannot divide the money and exchange in several rounds over the counter in order to remain below the limit if you have a larger amount. You must deliver or send all amounts above NOK 7 000, including coins, to Norges Bank in Oslo. We will transfer the redemption amount to your account.

Can I receive banknotes that are legal tender by post?
No. We do not send physical banknote(s) and coin(s) by post.
Can I receive the money in my foreign bank account?
Is there a time limit for exchanging withdrawn banknotes and coins?
Can I exchange foreign currency?
No. We do not exchange foreign currency. Your bank or a bureau de change will be able to advise you.
Can I exchange withdrawn banknotes and coins on behalf of someone else?
If you exchange money on behalf of someone else, you need to provide signed confirmation from the owner of the cash, naming you as agent and how the owner would like to receive the money. A certified photocopy of your ID and that of the owner of the banknotes is required.
Can I redeem coins?

How do I know that Norges Bank has received my banknotes and coins?
How long is the exchange processing time for transferring the amount to my account?
Amounts up to NOK 7,000 - processing time is normally under 3 weeks.
Amounts over NOK 7,000 - processing time is normally 8-10 weeks.
Amounts over NOK 40,000 - processing time is normally 10-16 weeks.
You will receive a confirmation by e-mail when we have opened your mail with information about the processing time and the total amount we have counted.
You will also receive a confirmation by e-mail when the money has been transferred to your account.
Why does Norges Bank request additional and supplemental information for the exchange?
Is a fee charged for exchanging withdrawn banknotes and coins?
No fee is charged for the exchange process.
How do I contact Norges Bank?
Many people contact us to ask if we have received their postal shipments. Norges Bank receives a lot of mail every day. It may take some time before we open all the letters. It usually takes 2-3 weeks before we transfer the amount to your account. Exchanges with large amounts may take longer.
Remember that the actual transit time for shipments also takes time.
If you stated an e-mail address when filling in the form, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail when we have opened your letter/parcel, stating the case processing time and the total amount we have received.
